I’m trying to teach one of my figures to whistle, I can get some kind of whistle out without moving my lips but it’s quite a bit softer than my own whistle. Any tips anyone or just keep practicing?

I got nothing definite on this Paul. I just tried putting my tongue against the roof of my mouth near the teeth. The sides touched and the center of the tongue had a slight gap which I tried blowing air through. It created a very airy whistle – but I couldn’t get any real volume.

I found these on Youtube:

They might help you figure out your own method.

I think I’m doing what Tom described. I can whistle and very loudly but you can tell that it is me doing it. No one would believe that my puppet whistled that loud.

In high school years (too long ago to say), I had a very shrill whistle, without fingers in my mouth, at football games, but I lost the ability to do it today.  To do so, the lower lip needs to curl in.  To do so, it is obvious that you are doing the whistle.

This is where I’m at so far (and yes I’m aware that my lips moved A LOT whilst blowing)

It sounded pretty good Paul.  I think you are on to something… to become the first whistling ventriloquist.

That wasn’t bad Paul. Do you use a mic at gigs or no. I bet the mic would definitely bring out the sound better. By the way… that is all I could probably get out too.

Do I use a mic at gigs…I don’t do gigs 😉

Although that is open to interpretation, I’ve stood in front of an audience and performed 4 times in the 6 or 7 years I’ve been trying to get somewhere with this. 3 times i used a mic. The 3 times I used a mic was at Ventarama during open mic (without a mic it would just have bene called open 😀 )

I do have a mic of my own now for if/when I can get the anxiety sorted enough to do some shows.

Pretty sure if it wasn’t for my anxiety I’d have done a lot more by now 🙁

As for the whistling I’d have thought a mic would help but at the same time it’s swings and roundabouts isn’t it as it won’t just be the puppets whistle getting applified. I think I need to learn to do a very soft normal whistle to componsate.

Paul, that looked really good to me! If the puppet is alive enough everyone will be looking at him anyway. You’ve got a wonderful start.
